vercaemersite, Oostende
As part of a European tender, we designed a spacious apartment complex in the Belgian coastal resort of Oostende.
The site is located on the outer edge of the Wellington golf course and is accessed by the main road from Oostende to the coast. The location is on the border between two worlds, one formal and one informal.
In combination with large windows in the apartments, the interior world connects with the exterior world, creating a spacious, bright and vivid spatial experience
By analysing the context and programme, we came up with the concept of a freestanding building on the site. With this concept, we want to emphasize the existing informal qualities of the site, with the landscape of the Wellington golf course stretched to the edges of the plot. The solitary and compact building itself takes full advantage of the orientation and the view.
The building is situated on a gentle rise in the landscape, in which the underground parking garage is situated. Both the kindergarten and after-school care facility are situated on the ground floor, each with access to its own private outdoor space. Spacious entrance halls on the ground floor give access to the apartments above.
The apartments are arranged around a shared atrium and a series of stacked decks. In combination with large windows in the apartments, the interior world connects with the exterior world, creating a spacious, bright and vivid spatial experience.
